UBC Student Health Services (SHS) offers students a wide range of health services provided by family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and specialists. The Physician Lead is responsible for the medical direction of SHS at the Vancouver Campus clinics. The Physician Lead role is primarily responsible for direct patient care, involving at least 60% of their time. All other administrative tasks related to this role involve approximately 40% of their time.
The Physician Lead enacts a commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonized practice throughout continuous improvement and innovative clinical and medical practices across the clinics and medical care of patients.
The Physician Lead works in the Student Health Clinics at either Koerner Pavilion and/or Orchard Commons in the University of British Columbia. The clinics are open during the regular work week with extended hours on some evenings and weekends depending on the academic term.
The Physician Lead participates in a call schedule when the clinic is closed for urgent and emergent patient care needs.
Organizational Status
Reporting to the Director, Student Health Service, the Physician Lead is responsible for the direction of medical services as stated in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia Practice Standard for Primary Care Provision. The Physician Lead works closely with students, faculty, and staff to provide medical advice and direction for SHS. SHS is under the Vice President, Students (VPS) portfolio and may need to liaise with other members of staff and leaders in VPS, including the Associate Vice President, Student Health.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Physician Lead takes on all the responsibilities of a fully licensed physician.
Must exercise judgement based upon a thorough knowledge of medical procedures, guidelines and regulations. Errors in judgement may cause serious results and/or harm to students or staff, reduce service, cause embarrassment and loss of credibility for the involved staff or provider, the Physician Lead, and SHS.
The position has access to sensitive and confidential information, the untimely or inappropriate release of which could cause acute embarrassment to the University, as well as litigation. Incorrect decisions/judgement will directly affect the UBC’s reputation with the employer, health authorities, community and faculty, staff, alumni, and students.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Director, Student Health Service. Works independently. Informs Director of important issues related to the medical services of the SHS clinics.
Supervision Given
Provides leadership including direct and indirect management and supervision to all medical staff within the two SHS clinics at the UBC Vancouver Campus, including family physicians, specialists, and nurse practitioners. Supervises physicians by providing guidance and mentorship, ensuring appropriateness of job responsibilities, providing or directing the provision of medical training and development, evaluating performance, and responding to complaints, concerns and grievances.
