Position Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides medical care, recovery therapies and programs, and everyday care and support to clients in Detox and addictions residential treatment. The LPN provides nursing care to clients, administers medications in accordance with organizational and pharmaceutical policies and procedures, and provides support to the Nursing Team and Physician as directed. The LPN supports its clients in recovery in a myriad of practical and therapeutic ways including: supporting recovery strategies, assisting with client needs, listening empathetically, and more.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Clinical nursing assessments during the patient intake and discharge process as per facility policies and procedures.
- Gathering of medical /mental health / substance use history
- Collection of urine for substance screening, HCG testing or urinalysis
- Administration of breathalyzer test
- Provide nursing care and interventions, vital sign monitoring, and medication administration for patients during medically supervised detox process as per facility protocols utilizing withdrawal assessment tools including CIWA-AR, CIWA-B and COWS.
- Provide nursing care, interventions, and monitoring of acute or chronic conditions, administer scheduled and PRN medications as per facility to CORE Programming patients.
- Perform First Aid; respond to acute emergent situations and administration of emergency medications as required, such as epinephrine or naloxone, as per facility standing orders and protocols.
- Document nursing assessments, nursing care, behaviors and related progress in KIPU electronic medical record system.
- Communicate with physician regarding acute medical concerns, medication orders, detox protocols, patient progress, medical services required and discharge prescriptions.
- Schedule, coordinate and document physician and Lab appointments.
- Weekly medication and medical supply order.
- Collaborate with Physician, Clinical Counselors, Aftercare and Admissions Coordinators, Support Staff, and the Administrative Team via telephone, email, Microsoft Teams, KIPU documentation and in-person meetings to maintain continuity of care.
- Administrative tasks such as creating patient identification labels, updating / photocopying /printing forms or documents using Microsoft Office.
- Participate in quality assurance programs, assist in establishment and updating of policy and procedures, preparation of reports as needed.
- General cleaning / sanitizing of patient rooms after discharge. Typical tasks include items such as cleaning / sanitizing of high touch surfaces, bedside tables, bedmaking and providing clean linens.
- General cleaning / sanitization of the patient lounge, Nursing office, bathroom and medication administration area.
Experience And Qualifications
- Certificate from a recognized Health Care Worker educational program such as Community Health Worker Program and/or experience in related field an asset.
- Trauma informed training/experience an asset.
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent diploma.
- Must be able to read and write and communicate verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to understand and follow directions.
- Must have good hearing and eyesight.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Level C.
- Clear Criminal record check through the Ministry of Justice.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License in good standing
