Qualifications:
Clinical Domain: The Nurse Practitioner (NP) plays a vital role in delivering direct and comprehensive clinical care to patients. Operating autonomously within the legislated scope of practice, the NP diagnoses, orders tests, prescribes medications, and performs procedures. Collaboration with the interprofessional team ensures holistic care for patients and their families.
Research: The NP actively supports patient care and nursing practice innovations through evidence-based research. By participating in and utilizing research, the NP contributes to improved patient outcomes, advances nursing knowledge, and enhances professional practice. Evaluation of current practices at individual and systems levels guides the identification of gaps for future research to elevate the standard of care.
Education: In the realm of education, the NP serves as a valuable resource, coach, and mentor to the interprofessional team, especially in complex patient situations. Additionally, the NP acts as a preceptor to students, identifies learning needs, and collaborates with academic partners to meet training and development requirements. Consultation for patients, families, and community partners further highlights the educational impact of the NP role.
Leadership: The NP identifies and manages risks related to clinical practice, fostering improvement through the development and evaluation of practice guidelines, standards, policies, and procedures. Active participation in clinical and organizational committees showcases the NP's commitment to excellence. Leadership extends to supporting evidence-based practice, continuous quality improvement, and advocacy for individuals, families, and communities. The NP also addresses learning needs within the interprofessional team, locally, and regionally, promoting excellence in nursing practice.
