REGISTERED PSYCHIATRIC NURSING POSITION
Reports To: Executive Director
Position Summary
Cocoon Mental Health Clinic is an innovative concept in mental health delivery, optimizing Registered Psychiatric Nurses in schools and beyond in community.
Primary role of the nursing team at Cocoon Mental Health Clinic will be to perform Mental Health Nursing Needs Assessments to clients referred to the Clinic. In addition, to provide System Navigation Services as required to ensure clients, families and other care-givers feel safe, heard and professionally attended to.
Mental Health Learning Needs Assessments will be conducted using the following tools:
- Mental Status Exams
- Evidence-Based Screeners
- Intensive Psychosocial Assessment
- Suicide Risk Assessment
Possible post-assessment interventions may include but are not limited to:
- General System Navigation
- Symptom Reduction Strategies
- Medication Management
- Therapy Skills
- Risk Assessment
- Ongoing Monitoring
Mental Health/Psychiatric nurses at Cocoon Mental Health Clinic must demonstrate competency in all of the above services. Additional training may be provided to build skills and confidence in professional execution of these core deliverables.
Fundamental to working at Cocoon Mental Health Clinic is the treatment of real-world impacts resulting from the symptoms of mental illness. Cocoon nurses will provide the necessary tools to enable youth to function better in their home, their school and their community. Issues such as attention and concentration, isolation, impacts on appetite and energy, self-harm and suicidal thoughts and other commonly experienced symptoms.
Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Psychiatric Nursing (eg, BScPN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with related experience will be considered.
- A minimum of three (3) years within the past 5 years of relevant clinical experience in mental health
- Active practicing licensure with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba or the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba
- ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) certification preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel)

- Previous experience in working with children and youth will be an asset
- Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented philosophy of mental health
- Knowledge of, competence and aptitude for youth mental health and addiction intervention, crisis intervention, co-occurring disorders, early intervention for psychosis.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and provide leadership with a team in providing mental healthcare
- Demonstrated ability to practice independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary interagency team
- Demonstrated ability to consider privacy and legislative requirements between different agencies within and outside of health
- Demonstrated effective problem solving organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, creative thinking and decision-making skills
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and clients and to professionally represent Cocoon Mental Health Clinic at all times.
- Ability to respect and promote confidentiality.
