Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Manager of Clinics and the Lead Dentist the Dental Hygienist / Administrator is will responsible for ensuring the efficient day-to-day operation of the dental clinic. He/she will be responsible for providing patient hygiene services when volunteer sessions are vacant and will support the volunteer dentists and hygienists in the role of chairside dental assistant during their rotation through the clinic. The Dental Hygienist/Administrator will also coordinate appropriate follow-up of treatments for teeth or gum diseases and handle dental emergencies as required. He/she will also be responsible all of the administrative duties of the dental clinic and for planning and coordinating to make sure the clinic is running smoothly.
The Dental Hygienist / Administrator is flexible, able to meet changing needs and competing priorities, and is willing to adapt to different situations. You are a reliable self-starter with the ability to handle a wide range of hygiene and administrative related tasks.
Major Responsibilities:
DENTAL HYGIENIST
- Conduct initial oral screenings
- Perform preventative dental procedures such as teeth cleaning, scaling, gum stimulation and fluoride and sealant applications
- Assess patient conditions and health risks by completing oral cancer screening, medical history reviews and charting (dental and periodontal)
- Provide oral care instructions such as oral hygiene procedures, strategies to maintain and improve oral health and on the impact of nutrition on oral health
- Consult with volunteer Dentists on patient care
- Take dental impressions
- Take and develop X-rays
- Document treatment plans and care performed on patients
- Follow-ups where required
- Maintain, sharpen and sterilize instruments
- Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations
- Adhere to infection control policies and protocols
- Maintain patient confidentiality
DENTAL OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR (In collaboration with the Lead Dentist)
- Assists in establishing and coordinating administrative policies and procedures
- Act as the point of contact among dentists, dental assistants, patients, and Ottawa Mission employees
- Manage information flow in a timely and accurate manner
- Prepare monthly stats
- Monitor and order inventory and equipment
- Provide necessary regularly scheduled equipment maintenance
- Liaise/coordinate with appropriate agencies/individuals to meet equipment repair needs
- Respond to general request/inquiries from clients
- Organize and maintain the office filing systems
- Maintaining patient records
- Schedules and confirms patient appointments
- Confirms treatment sessions with assigned volunteer Dentists and Hygienists
- Attempts to fill vacant sessions with volunteer clinical providers
- Assists in maintaining information data base of chairside volunteers (regular and floaters) (past and present)
- Assists in maintaining volunteer scheduling template
- Assists in recruitment, screening, and orientation of volunteers
- Other duties as assigned
Other Requirements:
Education & Registrations:
- Completion of a Dental Hygiene Program from an accredited college
- Registered with the Ontario Dental Hygiene Association
- Current license to practice in Ontario
- Current First-Aid / CPR Certification
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience as a Dental Hygienist
- Experience working with Homeless and Vulnerable populations
Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact easily with individuals at all levels
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with an ability to think proactively
- High attention to detail is a must
- Experience exercising discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information
- Detailed understanding of health and safety requirement
- Strong knowledge of instrumentation
- Good working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively
- Ability handle competing deadlines concurrently
- Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills
- Self-starter that takes initiative
- Bilingualism considered an asset
Working Conditions:
- Primarily dental office setting
- Must work to, sometimes strident, deadlines, manage and respond to competing priorities
- Must work with minimal supervision
- High Cognitive ability required
- Exposure to a sometimes challenging environment that has the potential for confrontation and/or exposure to violence
