Thorpe Recovery Centre is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing client-centered and community-based addiction services. We are an accredited facility, providing Residential Treatment, Medically Supported Detox and a Family Program. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) brings advanced expertise, encompassing skills and competencies to their role. NP responsibilities span community-based healthcare, relying on advanced decision-making abilities for assessment, diagnosis, and case management.
Nurse Practitioners at Thorpe Recovery Centre deliver healthcare services with a strong emphasis on health promotion, prevention, and rehabilitation, all within a defined nursing practice scope. They conduct comprehensive assessments, make diagnoses (including test ordering and interpretation), provide interventions (including medication prescriptions), manage care, facilitate referrals, and evaluate patient care across the entire healthcare spectrum.
Nurse Practitioner Accountabilities
- Provides oversight to the medical team at TRC including Medical Managers, RNs, RPNs, LPNs and HCAs.
- Assesses, monitors, recognizes clients needs for substance use withdrawal management ("detox"), post acute withdrawal syndrome and familiar with treatments for sub-categories with substance use disorder(s).
- Providing detailed information to patient regarding treatments, possible side effects, aftercare instructions, aftercare maintenance, or preventative care methods.
- Ensuring complete and accurate documentation of patient information and treatments for patient charts and medical records.
- Using comprehensive knowledge to assess patients by diagnosing diseases, disorders, or conditions.
- Report and document incidents, adverse events and/or near misses according to practice setting guidelines and policies.
- Presenting professional guidance to other health professionals and working autonomously with other interdisciplinary health care professionals.
- Initiating health care treatment for health care management, therapeutic interventions, and prescribing medication.
- Initiating addictions focused health care treatment for health management, therapeutic interventions and prescribing medications according to CARNA NP scope of practice.
- Follows CARNA NP standards of care including practice restrictions guidelines for all addictions related health care services to inpatient care settings.
- Regularly reviews and participates with updates with medical policies and procedures and ensures alignment with all medical team members.
- In collaboration with CEO and CFO, create an approved all medical budget decision.
- Responsible for setting monitoring check frequencies with nurses.
- Demonstrate the ability to operate health equipment safely.
Nurse Practitioner Qualifications
- A masters degree in nursing with a focus on Advanced Clinical Practice including recognized certifications from advanced training for NPs in Substance Use Disorder treatment(s).
- Must have current non restricted registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) in the NP adult or family stream.
- Must have current registration with TPP Alberta.
- A minimum of 5 years of related experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Proven leadership experience in a patient facing environment.
- Current experience as an NP in an acute care setting, preferably Critical Care and Addictions and Mental Health Sectors.
- Current basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification and ACLS.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to efficiently work in a team and face to face with clients.
- Will be required to obtain a Criminal record Check with Vulnerable sector check upon hiring and every 2 years of employment.
