The Psychologist works closely with the interdisciplinary team (Developmental Pediatrician, Social Worker, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, and other specialties) providing services to children and their families aged 0-18. The Child Development Team Psychologist serves a very diverse population of children and adolescents: including learning, behavioural, developmental and cognitive challenges.
This position functions autonomously and uses critical thinking and independent analysis/judgment in the application of specialized psychological knowledge and principles in clinical practice. The incumbent is responsible for the provision of psychological/cognitive assessment, standardized psychometric testing, formulation of the diagnosis based upon the DSM-5 criterion, and therapeutic intervention for children/adolescents and their families within a chronic illness and physical disability framework. The incumbent provides/supervises specialized therapy in situations where the application of professional analysis based upon a broad range of theoretical frameworks in complex practice situations is essential. The clinician has a specialty area of children and adolescents with neuro/developmental conditions and functions autonomously using independent judgment in determining appropriate assessment, diagnosis and interventions and then developing, implementing, and evaluating/analyzing treatment plans. Work involves providing clinical education and consultation to physicians and other professional personnel; mentoring; coaching and clinical consultation to enhance the delivery of client care patients; provision of leadership direction for professional development; clinical education and consultation with other organizations and agencies; research and evaluation of services; ensuring compliance with professional standards; and development and implementation of psychology policies as they affect population groups. The Psychologist responds to broader systems issues impacting on services to specific client populations.
This position also includes advanced clinical supervisory and leadership responsibilities in the discipline of psychology. The Psychologist provides supervision across the range of training experiences offered at Eastern Health. This may include advanced doctoral-level clinical supervision, training, and consultation to masters- and doctoral-level provisionally registered Psychologists seeking registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador Psychology Board (NLPB); to senior doctoral-level graduate students in clinical Psychology; and Pre-Doctoral Psychology Residents during their placements/rotations at the Development and Rehabilitation Division. Furthermore, the Psychologist has an integral role in the development and ongoing maintenance of training in clinical psychology within the Development and Rehabilitation Division and the broader system of Eastern Health.
