Position Description

Acute Care Surgery (ACS), Hospitalist Posting St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is seeking a Hospitalist physician with expertise in Medicine and General Surgery to provide services to persons who are receiving care provided by the Acute Care Surgery (ACS) service, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. This will be a 1.0 FTE position.

As a multi-site, tertiary care, academic and research health care organization, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) strives to care for patients and families in a spirit of compassion and commits to making a difference in people's lives through innovative health services and internationally recognized programs. As well as having strong general internal medicine, general surgery, critical care, and family medicine programs, SJHH specialty and regional services include respiratory and gastrointestinal medicine; nephrology; renal transplant; mental health; ophthalmology, and thoracic, head and neck, Bariatric and Urological surgery. SJHH is a member of the St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS), and is affiliated with McMaster University and Mohawk College.

The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) service is a busy service that cares for patients with acute General Surgical conditions, encompassing both operative and nonoperative management of acute abdominal and postoperative conditions. There is a focus on Minimally Invasive Surgery, which results in short lengths of stay for patient admissions and an emphasis on multi-modal perioperative pain management.

The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the ACS team to provide clinical service to the General Surgery patients. This clinician will be responsible for providing support to the ACS team with the management of ACS Patients. You will assess patients referred to the General Surgery Service via the Emergency Department, consult on patients referred by other medical and surgical subspecialty services, assess patients diverted to rapid assessment clinics, and complete daily rounding on ACS inpatients. The clinician will work closely with the ACS team which includes the MRP Surgeon of the week, residents, physician assistants and members of our multi-disciplinary team.

The clinician will be required to work a maximum of 160 hours a month, averaging 40 hours per week. This will be distributed between a maximum of 5 calls a month (5 pm to 7 am), with the remaining hours distributed in shifts from 7 am to 3 pm and 2 pm to 10 pm.

The successful candidate will be required to hold a clinical appointment in the Department of Medicine and/or the Department of Family Medicine and/or the Department of Surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton. Academic responsibilities include clinical education and supervision on the ACS service of all levels of medical learners, residents, physician assistants and students.

Qualifications

  • MD with CCFP, Royal College, or equivalent certification
  • Experience in Medicine or General Surgery as a member of an interdisciplinary team, preferably with experience in more than one setting
  • Eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • Eligible to attain an academic appointment with McMaster University
  • Demonstrated experience providing care to structurally vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to develop collegial relationships
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching or clinical research
  • Energy, enthusiasm and creativity
  • A track record of learning
