Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Student Wellness Centre (SWC), the newly created Nurse Practitioner role within the Student Wellness Centre will be an integral part of the Student Wellness Centre medical team on the Brantford and Milton Campus. Laurier’s Student Wellness Centre provides student-centered, accessible, and confidential services that enhance students’ personal and academic success at university. The multi-disciplinary SWC team is staffed by professionals with a special interest in providing service and coordinated health care and wellness support to university students. The team is currently comprised of medical physicians, a psychiatrist, counsellors, registered nurses, a mental health nurse, clinic aide, medical receptionists, health educators. The Nurse Practitioner provides patient-centered primary healthcare to a diverse student population with a variety of physical and mental health needs. This role contributes to the overall health and well-being of our students.
Accountabilities
Direct Client Service – 80%
- Provides client-centered primary care to clients within the full scope of practice as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Responsibilities include:
- Ability to work independently and autonomously to the full scope of a Nurse Practitioner, while also being able to work collaboratively within the interdisciplinary Student Wellness team.
- Performs comprehensive health assessments including a health history and physical examinations using a holistic framework with the management of acute and chronic medical conditions, therapeutic management, and health promotion.
- Considers the social determinants of health, associated health risks, and addresses the biopsychosocial needs of clients, including clients with multiple comorbid health conditions, mental health diagnoses and/or concurrent disorders involving substance use/abuse.
- Assess client presentation, evaluates urgency of care needed, and selects appropriate level of care.
Administration – 10%
- Supporting Medical Staff (RNs and Clinic Aide) alongside the Nursing Manager, to ensure safe and effective patient care is being implemented and supported.
- Actively participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health services at designated campuses.
- Work closely with the Leadership Team and Director to support policies, procedures, and best practice development in the Student Wellness Centre.
Collaboration and Consultation-10%
- Liaise closely with student support personnel and service areas. This includes, but is not limited to working closely with the Dean of Students, other Student Wellness Centre professionals, Accessible Learning, Learning Services (in particular, Early Alert and Learning Strategist staff), Residence Life, and Special Constable Service.
- Develop and maintain relationships with campus and community resources.
Qualifications
- Masters of Nursing Degree.
- Minimum of three years’ experience working as a primary care NP supporting clients with complex needs.
- Certification and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner).
- Completion of a Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Primary Health Care.
Hours of Work
This is a full-time, continuing position. Regular hours of work are 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday. Flexibility in hours may be required due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust hours so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
Compensation Level:
Rate of Pay: $53.61 - $56.68 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $61.27. Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
