Clinic | Edmonton, AB
The Alberta Obesity Centre is a highly multidisciplinary clinic compromised of family physicians, bariatric surgeons and internal medicine physicians that work collaboratively to manage obesity through the province. We work in cross functional teams including medical obesity management, nutrition, behavioural medicine, sports medicine and bariatric surgery. We are fully supported by a team of bariatric nurse educators who work with our physicians as well as directly with our patients. Medical Obesity Management We are focused on providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based care for patients with obesity. We need to shift how we view obesity: it is a chronic disease that requires treatment. There is no "magic pill" for obesity, but within a multidisciplinary, long-term program, medication has been shown to be quite effective. Nutrition Learning and implementing positive lifestyle choices is key in how we manage our patients. Ensuring the proper mix of carbohydrates, protein and fats is vital as well as ensuring the body's micronutrients are assessed and addressed. Behavioural Medicine Assessing and treating underlying obesity-related mood, anxiety and behavioural disorders is very important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We strive to provide patients with the mental health support needed alongside long-term obesity management. Bariatric Surgery Although we are not a surgical clinic, having surgical experts in the field looking after patients is invaluable. Patients are able to consult with physicians to decide if bariatric surgery aligns with their health goals.
