Located in central Canada, in the southwestern portion of the Province of Manitoba, the Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain (www.killarney.ca) is a serene lake town nestled in the heart of the rolling Turtle Mountains and the tri-lake area - a nature lover's playground. Located in a rural area, the economy of Killarney and the surrounding region is rich in agriculture, with many local residents actively farming. With an abundance of lakes, beaches, forests, and other natural areas, Killarney is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The town is home to a beautiful golf course and several others within an hour's range. Killarney is situated only 20 km from the US border. The town is two and a half hours away from Winnipeg, the major center of the Province, and one hour from Brandon, the Province’s second-largest city. Additionally, Riding Mountain National Park is a two-hour drive, offering residents and visitors access to breathtaking natural beauty. In addition to its natural beauty, Killarney is known for its safe and welcoming environment. The friendly community is committed to ensuring its residents feel comfortable and protected. With affordable housing options and the knowledge that you're living in a town where safety and security are top priorities – Killarney is an ideal place to call home. Killarney also has an interesting history, with an Irish connection. An early settler and Irish land surveyor, John Sidney O'Brien, named Killarney Lake after the Lakes of Killarney in Ireland. Legend has it that as he sat on the shore of the lake, O’Brien took a bottle of “Good Irish” from his pack and, pouring it into the lake, christened it Killarney. Today, the "Irish"-ness of the community is reflected in its green fire engines, Erin and Kerry Parks, Little Irish Downs, and many other Irish-themed attractions. It is also home to the “Killarney Shamrocks” hockey team and the “Killarney Lakers” baseball team. While Killarney has no official connection with the town of Killarney, Ireland, most of the people who initially settled in the region were from the Scottish Highlands, England, and Central Europe. Presently, the Municipality’s population of approximately 3,500 nearly doubles during the summer months when it attracts people to its cottages and campgrounds, who come to enjoy this ‘cottage country’ with its abundance of lakes, beaches, forests, and other natural areas that are typically “Canadian.” Voted the best retirement community in Canada by Canadian Living Magazine, Killarney works hard to maintain this reputation and its comfortable, safe, friendly, and affordable living environment.
